Vasco Borden tira sur les revers de son veston et arrangea sa cravate en suivant le couloir recouvert d'une épaisse moquette. Il n'avait pas l'habitude de porter un complet, même celui-ci, marine, qu'il avait fait exécuter sur mesure pour masquer sa puissante musculature. Vasco était costaud, un mètre quatre-vingt-douze pour cent huit kilos, un gabarit de footballeur. Âgé de quarante-neuf ans, détective privé de son état, il était spécialisé dans la recherche de fugitifs. L'homme qu'il filait, trente ans, le crâne dégarni, chercheur à MicroProteonomics, à Cambridge, Massachusetts, se dirigeait vers la grande salle de conférences.
Le congrès Bio Change 2006, dont le slogan opti­miste était «C'est pour aujourd'hui !», se tenait à l'hôtel Venetian, à Las Vegas. Les deux mille participants représentaient tous ceux qui travaillaient dans le secteur de la biotechnologie, y compris les investisseurs, les directeurs des ressources humaines qui engageaient les scientifiques, les responsables de transfert de technologie, les P-DG, les avocats spécialistes de la propriété intellectuelle. D'une manière ou d'une autre, la quasi-totalité des entreprises de biotechnologie américaines était représentée.
Pour le fugitif, c'était l'endroit idéal pour retrouver son contact.
