The pattern of rising hospital readmissions for psychiatric treatment seems to indicate that little is known about the long-range effectiveness of treatment. Since the course of a person`s mental illness is generally lengthy and complex, extending in time both before and beyond treatment, and since so little is known about what happens after the patient is discharged, the authors` thesis is that more research is needed on the later career of the patient. This book is just such a study-an examination of the influence of social class upon the long-range outcome of psychiatric treatment and the adjustment of former patients in the community. This study is a follow-up to a book published 10 years ago by Wiley, Hollingshead and Redlich`s Social Class and Mental Illness. The authors deal with later periods in the career of the mental patient-treatment outcome, the probability of readmission to treatment and adjustment in the community after treatment. They focus upon the relationships between social class and what happened to the patients in the 10 years following the original study.
