Lovely and mystifying tale, originally published as 'La Maison de l'oiseau'. Delagrave, 1966. Mariela had often gathered acorns in the woods around the deserted castle of Songoli, near her home. But on this evening, through the dusk, she was amazed to see the beautiful castle all lit up. She was even more astonished to see a royal parade of splendidly costumed horses and men-at-arms. But, oddest and most mysterious of all, was the proud black pony upon whose gold-embroidered saddle sat an elegant, crested bird who was addressed by one and all as "Your Highness". She was so fascinated that she could hardly wait to explore the next day. Life was full of mystery from then on. What had happened to the young Prince, who had disappeared so strangely? Why was the beautiful bird treated as though he were indeed the Prince, changed by evil magic into a bird? Why was Mariela brought to live in the castle as the unhappy Queen's companion?.
